City History
Fez was founded in 789 by Idris I. It became the spiritual and intellectual capital of Morocco. Its medina, Fes el-Bali, is one of the largest pedestrian areas in the world. Al Quaraouiyine University (859) is the oldest still operating. The city prospered under the Marinids (13th-15th centuries).
